Recover
data from CD/DVD
It's also possible to lose data from
CD and other removable media like a digital camera's flash card or
USB thumb drive. Thankfully there are solutions tailored for these
forms of media that won't cost a penny to use.
If you've got a CD or DVD that you're suddenly unable to access,
try cleaning the disc first with appropriate cleaning materials,
such as that sold online by Lindy (click
here). If
this fails - or you run into trouble with a
CD-R or CD-RW that you've burned data to on more than one occasion
using multiple sessions - then try IsoBuster, which you can
download for free from
here.
IsoBuster isn't fully featured by default - to unlock all of
its features you need to register for US$26. Don't worry, though,
because most of its data recovery capabilities are available for
free.
After installation, run the program and click Free funct. only.
Now insert the troublesome disc and wait for IsoBuster to
detect it: it'll warn you that a disc with read errors takes some
time to show up, so be patient. The annotated screenshot below
reveals how the program works. When you come to try and extract
items, try the basic Extract Objects or Extract
{filename} options first; if this fails, try the others - for
example, Extract as RAW data can be used in conjunction
with image files to try and recover all or part of the image. You
can also try using PC Inspector Smart Recovery for media
files on CD and DVD too - it may tell you the media is too damaged
for use in fast mode, but use its intensive mode and you may be
luckier. See here for more on
recovering image files.
Some drives are better at reading certain discs than others, so be
prepared to try IsoBuster on a variety of different
machines or drives before giving up.
